Matthew was born November 10, 2008. He weighed 5.4 lbs and 18.5 inches long. After a very eventful day, he was taken to the hospital nursery, where the nurses attempted to give him his first feeding. It was then, that Matthew went into respiratory distress. He began to turn blue. All these events took place while I was in surgery for other complications. When I was out of recovery, I was given the news that Matthew was having some breathing and heart problems. He was born six weeks early. He was brought in to me by the NICU Transport Team from Macon. He was going to be checked out by the cardiologist there.
Later, I received a call from Dr. Cardis and was told that Matthew was diagnosed with a Congential Heart Defect called Pulmonary Atresia and Ventricular Septal Defect(VSD). Basically, he was born without a pulmonary artery and a hole between the two lower chambers of the heart.
Matthew was transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston the next morning.
This is where his journey begins...
